Homeschooling Help

A Note from Pastor John

Teaching our children personally is something we all do, whether by choice or by default. We teach them by our example and by our words. Metaphors for how our children learn from us range from sponges, absorbing all they see and hear, to video/tape recorders, recording all that happens before them. Once absorbed and received, our kids then begin to live out what they contain. The LORD not only encourages but mandates that we as parents and caregivers teach our children the Word of God in order to raise godly children, capable of making wise decisions. Without the Scripture to lead them and us as we teach them, they will learn rebelliousness. Jesus knows children (Matthew 18:1-7), and He knows what we need to do to bring them up right and righteously (Proverbs 22:6, Deuteronomy 4:9-10, Deuteronomy 6:1-9, 1 Timothy 4:10-11). If we don’t teach our kids to follow Christ, the world will teach them what to follow. Placed in the middle of this direction as overseers of our children’s lives is teaching through loving discipline as taught us by God Himself (Hebrews 12:4-11, Proverbs 29:15, Proverbs 29:17). Built in this directive is the reminder that we correct our kids from a view of discernment, patience, and love (Colossians 3;21, Ephesians 6:4). Thankfully, we can do this work with the LORD Himself in the middle of it all, giving strength and encouragement. He will guide us and support us if we continually allow Him to lead us. To paraphrase a quote from Bob Talbert: “Teaching kids to count is good and important, but teaching them what counts is best.”
