Scripture: Jonah 4:1-11
Main Idea: Our kind and compassionate God covers the evil of all his people. 1) God’s Character Attacked (vv. 1-3) Application: 1. Confessional view of God vs. Functional view of God 2. Do we have a spirit of submission when approaching God? 2) God’s Covering Appointed (vv. 4-6) Application: 1. God’s kindness often leads us to repentance (Rom. 2:4) 2. Your reaction when confronted with sin? 3. God provides a covering to save every sinner who turns to him. 3) God’s Compassion Affirmed (vv. 7-11) Application: 1. Are you blind to the Lord's compassion to you? 2. Our sinful anger reveals our hearts. 3. God’s compassion covers both “prodigal son” and “older brother” types (Lk. 15) Takeaways from the book of Jonah: 1. The word of the Lord should be obeyed, and not ignored. 2. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness…but who will by no means clear the guilty (Ex. 34:6-7). 3. The Lord lovingly disciplines his own people for their good. 4. The Lord is pervasively Sovereign. 5. Salvation belongs to the Lord (2:9), and His salvation is needed by all people and every nation.
