What is Advent?
Advent is the celebration that the church partakes in together to remember the 'coming' of Jesus around the Christmas season. The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word Adventus, which means “coming” and the word Adventus is actually a translation of the Greek word Parousia. In the Advent season, the purpose is two-fold. First, it allows us an opportunity to celebrate the truth that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, took on flesh and dwelt among us (Jn 1:14). A celebration that God, through the person of Jesus Christ, would allow for men and women an opportunity to be reconciled to God and granting us peace (Lk 2:24; Col 1:26). Secondly, it's the season that reminds us of the Parousia, the second Coming of Jesus. As Christians, the Advent season reminds us that Jesus not only came to die on the cross for our sins and was raised to life, but that He is also coming back to take us to the place He has prepared for His church (Matt 24:22-44; Jn 14:3; 2 Pet 3:11-13).
How to celebrate Advent?
There are different ways to celebrate Advent, as a church we have attempted to create a schedule that will allow for us to have time of fellowship and worship centered on the person of Jesus Christ. You can learn more about those activities on our Advent Calendar. But as a household you can also celebrate and ready your own hearts this season and those within your home. So we wanted to provide a few different Advent devotionals that can be a resource for this season.
