3. Acts 8:26-34 — What does the text teach us about the Ethiopian? How would 'who' he is affect his worship in Jerusalem? What was the Ethiopian reading and what was his attitude towards it? What is your current posture towards God's Word - compare it to that of the Ethiopian? What role does Philip play in this story, and in what ways should it encourage us?
4. Acts 8:35 — How does the arrival of Jesus helps us to understand the Old Testament? What Old Testament story do you understand or interpret differently because of Jesus? What specific of the Bible was the Ethiopian reading, and why is it significant? In what ways are we like the Ethiopian Eunuch and how is it that we need the same Christ?
5. Acts 8:36–40 — How did Philip respond the angel of the Lord (v.26) and how did the Ethiopian respond to understanding the Word of the Lord (v.36)? What do both of these examples teach us? What are the three things that God provided for the Ethiopian and for His people today, found in this passage? What does Philip teach us about love (loves the widows, his enemies, and the outcast)?
Sermon Title: God's Gospel for the Outsider
Main Idea: God’s gospel is for the outsider: he provides messengers to explain it, the Messiah to save, and the means for obedience.
Outline:
- God provides messengers to explain (v. 26-34)
- God provides a Messiah for saving (v. 35)
- God provides means for obedience (v. 36-40)
- Rejoice that Jesus treats his servants differently than earthly kings treat theirs.
- Rest in God for he provides and pursues his people.
- Remember the Spirit’s leading.
- Reflect on Philip’s Christlike life.
- Receive the Eunuch (and anyone who is a sinner).
- Repent and believe, then be baptized.
