Matthew 21:18-22
Recap:
1. What has Jesus already taught us concerning good trees and bad trees? (Matt 7:15-20; 12:33-37) What lesson can be learned with the reoccurrence of this theme in the book of Matthew? How does it demonstrate God’s grace and His righteous judgement? (It demonstrates His grace in that He was patient and forbearing in His ministerial time giving all around an opportunity to repent and believe, but it also demonstrates His judgement in that at the end, He will judge the heart justly and perfectly)
2. What fruit had the chief priests and scribes demonstrated in the previous story and what caused this reaction? (v.15)
Reteach:
3. Matthew 21:18-19 – What was the lesson that Jesus was teaching with the fig tree? What might be some reasons why one’s heart would gravitate toward the sin of hypocrisy? (Pride or the desire for the approval of men) How does the Gospel help those who struggle with this sin? (The Gospel reveals to us that we all are sinners, but we have been approved by God through the forgiveness of our sins in Christ Jesus)
4. Matthew 21:20-22 – If God is the object of the believer’s faith, what are truths about God that should lead us to increase our faith in Him? When we lack faith in God, where should we turn too and why? (God’s Word, because it reveals and reminds us of who our God is)
5. How does our faith lead and help us to prayer? How does faith lead us to pray what Jesus taught us? (Matt. 6:10)
Reflect:
6. Are you bearing Godly fruit, and would your family and friends agree? Or are you living a double life? The Gospel gives us freedom from the sin of hypocrisy because, not only is that sin forgivable, but we don’t need to look for the approval of others – we have been approved by God, because of Jesus Christ.
