Psalms 1-2 | The Blessed Man
1. The Blessed Man’s Focus (1:1-2) “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, (Deuteronomy 17:18-19) 2. The Blessed Man’s Fruit (1:3-4) And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. (Genesis 2:8-10) 3. The Blessed Man’s Fate (1:5-6) 1. Man’s Rebellion (2:1-3) 2. God’s Response (2:4-9) 3. Man’s Refuge (2:10-12) Christ is the blessed man of Psalm 1 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (Galatians 4:4-5) For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:19) Christ is the installed king of Psalm 2 “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.” (Genesis 49:10) When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. (2 Samuel 7:12-14a) In light of these two psalms being connected, here is the main idea this morning: We must receive the righteousness of the blessed man to have refuge from the wrath of the anointed king. Response 1. Trust in the Son, not yourself 2. Delight in God’s Word, not the world 3. Worship the King, our refuge and righteousness
